China: Demands of Developing Countries Need to Be Heeded in New Round Talks

The present multilateral trade system is uncompleted and unbalanced as it fails to fully reflect the interests and requirements of the developing countries, a senior Chinese official said Saturday in Geneva.

Tong Zhiguang, member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, made the remarks at a parliamentary meeting on international trade. He said that the objectives of economic development of developing countries and their corresponding gradual market opening model should be fully respected.

The developed nations should earnestly implement their obligations committed in the Uruguay Round Agreement and improve the environment of market access for developing countries, said Tong.

He stressed that the formulation of new trade rules should have the equal and full participation of developing countries while the developing countries should coordinate to strengthen their collective negotiation capability in the multilateral trade system.

Tong called on the delegates participating in this meeting to play a more active role in informing the general public about the structures, functions, working methods and problems faced by the World Trade Organization.

He said the support and oversight of the parliament is necessary for the government to participate actively in the multilateral trade negotiation.

The two-day parliamentary meeting, which began Friday, is the first of its kind held by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a world organization of parliaments of sovereign states.

It is being attended by parliamentary delegates from more than 80 countries and representatives of international organizations.
