State Councilor Wu Yi Meets HK Senior Official

China's interior area is willing to further exchanges and cooperation with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) in economic development, said State Councilor Wu Yi in a meeting Saturday with Chau Tak Hay, secretary for Commerce and Industry of Hong Kong.

The Chinese central government and the Hong Kong SAR have carried out fruitful cooperation within the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) framework, Wu said. Contacts and communication between their trade and economic departments have yielded significant results, she noted.

"This has fully demonstrated the close trade and economic relations and concrete cooperation between the two sides under the 'one China, two systems' principle", Wu said.

She briefed the guests on the interior area's economic status and the strategy of China's west development.

The immense potentials for business development in the western region will provide broad prospects for domestic and overseas investment, She said.

"The central government welcomes Hong Kong-based investors to get involved in China's west development," said the State Councilor.

She spoke highly of a recent investigation tour by over 280 officials and businessmen from Hong Kong to western China, saying it is a good move and an impetus for China's west development, and will play a positive role on Hong Kong's economic development as well.

Wu hopes that the two sides will seek new ways and tap new potentials in a bid to bring trade and economic exchanges to a new high.

Chau said the Hong Kong SAR and the central government are closely related in trade and economic development, and the central government's long-term support has greatly accelerated the SAR's economic development.

The Hong Kong SAR is willing to enhance trade and economic cooperation with the interior area, he added.

Chau is here to attend the second APEC Investment Mart, one of a series of APEC events hosted by China this year.
