Heilongjiang Makes Regulation on Green Food

Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has drawn up a regulation on the management of green food, the first of its kind in the country, which has not yet enacted a similar national law.

The regulation defines what green food is, and stipulates the application and use of "green food" title, producing and protection of green food products, and the legal liability of violators.

With good preservation of the eco-environment and natural resources, the province has become one of the rapidest developers of green food in the country. Statistics show that the output value of green food in the province reached seven billion yuan (about 843 million US dollars) last year.

The regulation will help standardize the green food market and protect consumers' rights, as illegal operations are put under control, a provincial lawmaker said.

China, which started to promote green food in 1990, now has 800 enterprises producing green food, and the total industrial value of green food has hit 50 billion yuan, with exports worth over one billion yuan, according to official statistics.
