State Councilor Meets New Zealand's Former PM

China is ready to push forward exchanges with business communities in the Asian-Pacific region to strengthen the vitality of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and to promote regional economic cooperation and trade, Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi said Friday in Yantai.

Wu said in a meeting with Jenny Shipley, former New Zealand prime minister, that China has all along followed the process of APEC and multilateral trade negotiations, and supported the initiative to launch a new round of talks by the World Trade Organization as soon as possible.

She said the establishment of a just and reasonable mechanism for global multilateral trade helps the world economy develop in a healthy way.

Shipley said New Zealand has attached importance to the APEC activities. She feels encouraged by the Chair's Statement issued at the APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade which closed in Shanghai Thursday.

The statement demonstrates that all APEC member economies, with the same voice, have sent a strong message of pushing forward a new round of trade negotiations, she noted.

Shipley is here to attend the Second APEC Investment Mart which is scheduled to open Saturday.
