Mexico to push trade with China

Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada said in Beijing Thursday that Mexico will work with China to strengthen their trade relationship.

Speaking at a luncheon hosted by Chinese entrepreneurs, Fox said trade between the two countries remains at a low level, and mutual investments are still in their infancy.

He said when he held talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin Wednesday, both sides agreed that they would give strong support to exchanges and cooperation between entrepreneurs of the two countries.

"We firmly believe that Mexico and China are not competitors but cooperative partners," Fox said.

He said both China and Mexico have big markets and there exist great potentials for trade between the two countries.

Such trade reached US$1.8 billion-worth last year, compared with US$13 million-worth in 1972, said Yu Xiaosong, president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), while adressing the luncheon.

Meanwhile, some 200 Chinese and Mexican businessmen held talks on cooperation in the fields of textiles, metallurgy, mining, fishing and electronics Thursday.
