Ethiopian Police Admit Using Excessive Force in Recent ViolenceEthiopian Federal Police Commission Thursday admitted to have used excessive force in some respect in dealing with the recent student unrest and lawlessness by hooligans in the capital. The commission said that such mishaps had indeed occurred despite appropriate orientation to the cops prior to their assignment. The commission added absence of rules and regulations that govern the activities and the code of conducts of the police force had created problems in carrying out its mission, with the due sense of responsibility. However, the commission denied that it has detained members of the All Amhara People's Organization and the Ethiopian Democratic Party in connection with the recent violence in the city. The riots, which took place last month in the capital, left at least 30 people died and 200 others injured. |
