Thailand, Cambodia Agree To Speedily Remove Differences
The Cambodian and Thai governments have agreed to speedily remove points of differences for nurturing sound bilateral relationship and cooperation, the Thai News Agency(TNA) reported Friday.
The agreement was made at a meeting, held in Phnom Penh this week, between Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Cambodian Senior Minister Sok An, who is also chairman of the Cambodian National Petroleum Authority.
The points of differences include claimed ownership by both sides of an overlapping continental shelf area in the Gulf of Thailand, and unsettled border issues, the report noted.
Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to set up a joint technical panel to seek ways to particularly settle the problem of ownership of the overlapping area.
The dispute started in the early 1970s, barring access to the area, believed to contain promising petroleum resources, by both countries, said the report.
The two governments also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), identifying the overlapping zone as an area to be delimited and as a joint development area.
An agreement on the issue would be concluded by the newly-set up joint technical panel, it noted.
The issues are expected to be furthered discussed when Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra visits Cambodia shortly.
