Zoellick: Hoping to See China Enter WTO Within This YearChina has, through a brave reform, raised the living standard of the people and attracted more countries to do trade and investment there, thus setting an example for other developing countries, expressed Robert Zoellick, the US trade representative at the news conference of the meeting of APEC Ministers Reponsible for Trade. He said, in the new round of WTO talk to be held in Qatar in November, lessons must be drawn from the meeting of Seattle to ensure the success of agenda and a series of promises in the following months. He noted that it's understandable that some developing countries expressed their concern and anxiety to the relaxation on the topics to be discussed in the new round of talks and a flexible approach should be taken in the progress. Besides, the developed countries should offer more preferential treatment to support the developing countries in their capability building up. As the drawing-in of trade and investment has already become an inter-firm behavior in a broader sense, it requires the developing countries to strengthen legal system construction and the transparency of policies to create a better investment environment as China is practicing now, said Zoellick. Referring to China's joining WTO, he showed strong wishes for China's entry within this year due to its great importance to WTO. Once approved its access to WTO, China will surely play a key role in the organization. By PD Online Staff Deng Gang
