Chinese Chen Hong Advances to Quarterfinals at Badminton Worlds

World number four Chen Hong of China beat Ong Ewe Hock of Malaysia to clinch a berth in the quarterfinals of the world badminton championships Thursday in Seville.

Chen, who scored a decisive point in China's winning four successive Sudirman Cup mixed team champion last week, took 48 minutes to defeat the 12th seed Ong 15-11, 15-9.

The Chinese number one singles player will take on sixth seed Pulella Gopichand in the quarterfinals, in which Chen is expected to avenge his defeat in the All England championships final last March.

Gopichand, a surprise winner in the All England, reached the last eight after beating Fung Permadi of Chinese Taipei 15-10, 15- 13 in another match.
