US President's Visit to Spain Will Arouse Protests: Press Report

The upcoming visit of US President George W. Bush to Spain is expected to trigger mass protests from various social groups, the local press reported on Wednesday.

Trade unions, conservation and human rights groups that vehemently oppose the U.S. president's stance on foreign affairs, defense and environmental issues, have formed a coalition and are prepared to hold a demonstration outside the U.S. embassy Tuesday on his arrival in the Iberian country, said the press report.

The coalition said that Bush places U.S. energy interests above environmental protection and his disregard for the rest of the world is revealed by his withdrawal of the U.S. from the Kyoto Protocol, according to the report.

In addition, the coalition noted that he is in favor of a globalization that cares nothing about the poor in the world, and that his democracy model lacks credibility when taking into consideration the bombing of Iraq shortly after he was sworn in, said the report.

Bush's visit to Spain is the first leg of his Europe tour, which will take him to NATO headquarters in Brussels, the Goteborg (Sweden) Summit of the European Union, and Warsaw, Poland.
