Expo of Chinese Textiles and Garments Held in New York

June 6 saw more than 170 Chinese enterprises from 19 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of China participate in the second Chinese Textiles and Garments Exposition held in New York.

The US, being the 2nd large market for China's textiles and garments, last year witnessed US$6 billion of goods exported directly by Chinese enterprises to the market.

According to Xu Kunyuan, Vice-chairman of the China National Textile Industry Council, though it's impossible for Chinese firms to conduct exportation free from any interposition of middlemen, recent years have yet indicated a stronger tendency towards it. For example, the amount of textiles and costumes exported from the inland firms to the US via Hong Kong have seen a sharp decrease in the past few years, and the drop even hit 34 percent in the first four months of this year.

Since more foreign merchants are coming directly to Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Shandong for ordering their goods, the inland firms can sell their products at a bit higher price, said Xu.

As introduced the first expo of last year saw a total of US$0.2 billion capital contracted at the site. The expo has been greatly expanded this year and the products exhibited include garment material, clothing of men, women and children, silk products, dress decoration, etc, which is a full presentation of the current development in Chinese textile industry.
