Rwandan Army Kills 150 Rebels, Captures 35 Others

The Rwandan army said that it had killed 150 rebels and captured 35 others on Wednesday as they tried to enter Rwanda from the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to a Rwanda News Agency report from Kigali on Thursday.

The report quoted the military spokesman Col. Jean Bosco Kazura as saying that about 300 Interahamwe militiamen and former government soldiers of Rwanda sneaked into Mutura area, 83 kilometers northwest of Kigali on Tuesday night, prompting local residents to alert the army.

"The militias were hit hard and a big number was killed, others captured and those who were not captured crossed and vanished into the mountains and others to the DRC", Kazura added.

Kazura further said that no government soldier was reported dead or injured during the clash.

Since May, the army has killed at least 250 rebels and captured about 170 others within Rwanda, the report said.
