Megawati: Indonesian Political Crisis to End in August
Indonesian Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri said here Thursday that the ongoing political crisis in the country would die down in August this year after the commemoration of the 56 national independence day.
Megawati made the statement during her meeting with executive board of the Indonesian Younger Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI).
Executive Chairman of the HIPMI Hariyadi B Sukamdani said that Megawati gave an assurance that the political crisis would be over after August 17, 2001.
"Mrs. Megawati herself gave no details on the deadline of August 17. She only gave a hope that all businesses would be over after the date," Sukamdani was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.
According to Sukamdani, the vice president was also optimistic that the upcoming special session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) would be running smoothly, asking businessmen not to worry about.
"Moreover, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) - - the largest political party in the country, which Megawati chairs-- would give a full support for the success of the session, " Sukamdani said, quoting Megawati's statement.
Recently political crisis in the country has been heating up in particular in the wake of the House's decision which called on the special session of the MPR to ask accountability from President Abdurrahman Wahid during his less than two year rule.
The MPR has set a schedule for the special session on August 1, with the main agenda of asking accountability from Wahid who may face an impeachment in the session.
