Seminar on Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts

Experts called for better medical measures and social services to help drug addicts rehabilitate at a three-day national seminar, which ended in Fuzhou of east China's Fujian Province Wednesday.

The participants also discussed the need for a harsher crackdown on drug smuggling and trafficking, and stricter legislation on the use of drugs for medical purposes.

Statistics show that China had registered 860,000 drug abusers by 2000, indicating an increasing trend in drug abuse in the country.

Over the past decade, the Chinese government has established many rehabilitation centers across the country, employing leading therapies. But due mainly to a lack of consistent rehabilitation programs and psychological treatment, many of the abstainers have returned to the habit, according to sources.
