Maya Civilization Show Opens in Beijing

An exhibition featuring ancient Mexican civilization, titled "The Mysterious Maya", opened in Beijing Wednesday, as part of a series of cultural exchange programs between the Chinese and Mexican governments.

Visiting Mexican President Vicente Fox and Chinese Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng attended the opening ceremony.

On display are 186 relics, including stone statues, pottery, carved jade and various utensils.

The three-month show is sponsored by China's State Cultural Heritage Administration, the Beijing municipal government and the Mexican National Council of Culture and Arts.

An exhibition of selected cultural relics unearthed from Xi'an, featuring some of the famous terra-cotta warriors, has already been held in two Mexican cities.
