Backgrounder: China's Trade With Other APEC Members

The Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Trade Ministers Meeting opened in Shanghai on June 6 and will close on June 7. The following are figures regarding China's trade with other APEC members since 1998.

In 1998, China's trade volume with other APEC members dropped 2.2 percent to 236.666 billion U.S. dollars. Exports declined 3.7 percent to 131.988 billion dollars and imports decreased 0.1 percent to 104.678 billion dollars.

In 1999, China's trade volume with other APEC members increased by 11.1 percent to 270.97 billion dollars. Exports rose by 6.2 percent to 143.26 billion dollars and imports by 17.3 percent to 127.71 billion dollars.

In 2000, China's trade with other APEC members reached 351.72 billion dollars, up 29.8 percent, with exports amounting to 182.781 billion dollars, up 27.6 percent, and imports 168.94 billion dollars, up 32.3 percent.

During the first three months of 2001, China's trade with other APEC members totaled 83.219 billion dollars, up 14.7 percent from the same period in 2000. Exports were 42.457 billion dollars, up 13 percent, and imports were 40.762 billion dollars, up 16.4 percent.
