Zhu Rongji Meets Nigerien President
Premier Zhu Rongji Wednesday hailed the smooth development of relations between China and Niger, saying bilateral cooperation has expanded since the two countries restored diplomatic ties four years ago.

Zhu made the remarks at a meeting with Nigeran President Mamadou Tandja, during which the two leaders exchanged views on further the cooperation in all fields.

Zhu said that Chinese President Jiang Zemin held fruitful talks with Tandja Tuesday and they reached a consensus, which shows Tandja's current China visit has been successful.

Calling Tandja an old friend of the Chinese people, Zhu expressed appreciation for Tandja's efforts to promote the friendship between the two countries, adhere to the one-China principle and support the reunification cause of the Chinese people and China's stance on human rights and other major issues concerning international affairs.

The Chinese government has always attached importance to Sino- Nigerien relations, and is ready to work with Niger to promote the relations, he added.

Zhu noted that China and Niger have made progress in economic and trade cooperation, saying that enterprises of the two countries have also achieved encouraging progress in mutually beneficiary cooperation.

Zhu noted a group of Nigerien entrepreneurs are accompanying the president on his visit to China. He said this is conducive to promoting the mutual understanding between entrepreneurs of the two countries and creating more opportunities for cooperation.

He added that the Chinese government is willing to expand the areas of trade and economic cooperation with Niger in the spirit of practicality so as to achieve more success in this regard.

Tandja said that Niger-China friendly relations for cooperation have enjoyed a long history, and Niger has been the major beneficiary of the relations. Niger-China relations, which once departed from the correct line, have returned to normal thanks to the joint efforts of the two sides.

He noted that Niger is ready to work with China to promote bilateral relations to a new-type partnership.

Tandja said he believes trade and economic cooperation between Niger and China will be more fruitful with the exchanges and contacts between entrepreneurs of the two countries.
