Over 30 Million Chinese People Combat Drought Every Day

Some 30.4 million people are taking part in anti-drought endeavors in China every day.

"At the end of May, 25 mm to 50 mm of rain fell south of the Yangtze River, relieving somewhat the drought situation there," according to a drought prevention official.

However, most of the Northern provinces of China are still suffering severely, except the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which has had 15 mm to 30 mm of rain.

By the end of May, some 22.7 million ha of fields were suffering from drought, with 4.2 million ha unavailable for planting. About 15.8 million people and 11.4 million head of livestock have difficulty getting potable water.

The local governments have called on people to combat the continuing drought. Up to now, three billion yuan has been allocated to the anti-drought drive all over the country, and 15.3 million ha of fields have been irrigated and over 3.4 million people are able to get drinking water.
