Macedonia, Yugoslavia sign Military Cooperation Accord

Macedonia and Yugoslavia signed a military accord in the Macedonian capital of Spokje on Monday, the Macedonian Information Agency (MIA) reported.

Before signing the agreement, Macedonian Defense Minister Vlado Buckovski and his Yugoslav counterpart Slobodan Krapovic held talks on political and security situations in the Balkan region.

Holding similar views, they both agreed that the current crisis in the region should be resolved peacefully. However, Buckovski emphasized it may be necessary to adopt military actions to fight terrorists.

The two ministers also agreed that the two sides should exchange information on the border security situation and cracking down on terrorists and organized crimes.

Macedonia faces a crisis now, Buckovski said. So it is necessary for Macedonia to cooperate with Yugoslavia militarily and have "military equipment of offensive and defensive character" for the Macedonian army, he said.

Krapovic said the situation in southern Serbia is getting better. But without a solution on the Kosovo issue, "The problem of Albanian extremism and terrorism cannot be solved."

The Yugoslav defense minister also pointed out that human rights and the rights of ethnic groups are only a pretext of ethnic Albanians to carry out terrorist activities. "What they really want is more territory," he said.
