China Welcomes Arafat's Ceasefire Statement: FM Spokesman

China welcomes the unconditional ceasefire statement from Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi at a regular press conference Tuesday.

Sun made the remark when asked to comment on Arafat's recent statement that Palestine agrees to cease fire unconditionally and immediately and resume the peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel on the basis of the Mitchell report and an Egyptian-Jordanian peace initiative.

"China calls on both Palestine and Israel to cooperate actively with the mediating efforts of the international community and take all measures necessary to resume peace talks at an early date," he said.
