Shanghai Splendidly Attired to Greet APEC Meeting

June 6 will see trade ministers gather in Shanghai for the first ministerial-level meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Shanghai is now immersed in a warm atmosphere to welcome APEC guests, with eye-catching slogans on main streets. The newly decorated Shanghai International Convention Hall and International News Center nearby have been unveiled and opened to reporters from over 300 overseas media. The APECMRC passageway on Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport were also opened June 5.

One out of four Shanghai taxi drivers can speak English and nearly 20,000 drivers have been on an English training course in various forms. Not long ago, over 300 volunteers had taken English course at Fudan University.

Rich decoration has been made to show Shanghai honored with a long history and shocking newishness and, as Vice-mayor Jiang Yiren put it, it's a golden opportunity to promote China's opening up and sharpen competitive edge on international market. Hosting the APEC Meeting will surely earn Shanghai and China fame, said Deputy Secretary Chris Elder, New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
