Magnetic Suspension Railway to Link Shenzhen and Hong Kong

At the APEC 2001 second meeting of senior officials concluded June 3 in Shenzhen, Mayor Yu Youjun revealed that Shenzhen and Hong Kong are negotiating on the construction of a magnetic suspension railway and a freight route from Shenzhen to Taiwan via Macao is to be launched next month.

Yu, while answering question of reporters, said that Shenzhen and the SAR government are still discussing the possibility of building such a railway, as reported by Hong Kong Commercial Daily.

He showed that the superiority of magnetic suspension train (MST) can stand out only over a long distance with few stations. However, whether to build the railway between the two cities is still under discussion. By preliminary plans, a magnetic suspension railway is to be built between Shenzhen and Hong Kong only, which will make a journey from Kowloon to the urban area of Shenzhen available within 15 minutes, or there will be such a MST running between Hong Kong and Guangzhou through Shenzhen.
