WTO Director-General Arrives for Shanghai APEC MRT Meeting

Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Michael Moore arrived in Shanghai Tuesday morning to attend the meeting of ministers responsible for trade (MRT) of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Moore defined the MRT meeting as a "very important meeting" in terms of pushing for the launch of a new round of WTO multilateral negotiations, upon arrival at the airport.

"We gather together here to strengthen and push forward the process," he told Xinhua.

As for the issue of adopting tangible measures to curb the trend of trade protectionism, Moore said that the ministerial officials from APEC member economies will discuss this issue at the MRT meeting.

"I hope a new round of the talks will help," he said.

The APEC MRT meeting, the first ministerial level meeting of APEC organized by China this year, is slated for June 6-7 in China 's industrial and commercial center of Shanghai. It will make preparations for the APEC informal leadership meeting scheduled for October this year.

The MRT meeting will focus on such topics as pursuing an open trade policy and contributing to the multilateral trade system, promoting trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, enhancing economic and technical cooperation and advancing new economy and E-commerce.
