A wild giant lizard, the species under national first-class protection, has been found in a shrubbery in Qiongshan City, south China's island province of Hainan.
The giant lizard is about 1.3 meters long. Different from other lizards, it has obviously more patterns on its skin. If identified as a local species, this giant lizard will be of great significance.
For the first time since 1960 local residents have ever found giant lizards in the wild in Hainan. In the past 40 years, the provincial forestry department has investigated more than 460 places without discovering any trace. Some giant lizards found on the market all come from southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Vietnam.
