Symposium on Drug Abuse Held in Hong Kong

A symposium on substance abuse jointly organized by the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong College of Pediatricians was held here Sunday.

The objective of the symposium, "2001 Pediatric Update No.3: Substance Abuse," was to provide members of the College of Pediatricians with up-to-date information on Hong Kong's drug abuse situation and government actions to tackle the problem.

Professor Lee Shiu-hung, chairman of the ACAN, briefed at the symposium on the joint initiatives undertaken by ACAN and the government to combat the drug problem.

These include the setting up of a multi-discipline inter-departmental task force in early 2000 to recommend comprehensive strategies to tackle the rising problem of psychotropic substance abuse.

"The government adopts a five-pronged approach, which includes legislation and law enforcement, preventive education and publicity, treatment and rehabilitation, research, and international cooperation, in countering drugs abuse and trafficking in Hong Kong," said Charles Wong, principal assistant secretary for security (narcotics) on special duty.

Wong said the government is keeping a close watch on the problem of drug abuse, and comprehensive and innovative measures will be continuously put in place to tackle the problem.

The symposium was attended by over 200 members of the Hong Kong College of Pediatricians.
