Festival of Banishment of Evil Spirits Celebrated in Tibetan Temple

The festival of banishment of evil spirits, a traditional Buddhist rite, was warmly celebrated Friday in the Curpu Temple of China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

About 70 kilometers away from the region's capital of Lhasa, the Curpu Temple is a famous religious resort in Tibet, which first initiated the system of the reincarnation of Living Buddhas, sources said.

The festival has been celebrated in Tibet to dispel evil spirits, just as its name indicates.

The Curpu Temple also celebrates the festival to commemorate Padmasambhava, a famous Indian Buddhist who was said to have introduced Buddhism into Tibet.

This Friday is April 10 in the Tibetan calendar, marking the day Padmasambhava began spreading Buddhism in Tibet, sources said.

In black monster masks, a group of Lamas danced from morning till evening, giving a continuous performance of various religious dances.

Chilai Wangjiu, abbot of the temple, said the Lamas in the temple have spent a lot of time studying Buddhist scriptures and the religious activities there have gone smoothly.
