Russia Says Federal Troops Kill 106 Chechen Rebels in May
Federal police and interior troops killed 106 rebel gunmen and detained 70 others in the breakaway republic of Chechnya last month, Russian Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov said Saturday.
Another six militant heads on a wanted list and 533 people suspected as members of gunmen groups were also detained in the anti-terrorist operations in the republic last month, he said at a meeting of the Military Council of the interior troops, the Itar- Tass news agency reported.
Police freed six hostages in Chechnya during the same period, seized a large quantity of ammunition, eliminated 958 illegal mini- oil refineries and found 29 stolen cars in Chechnya in the month, Gryzlov said.
On the same day, a Russian army spokesman announced that since the start of this year, the Russian interior troops have lost 62 servicemen with 253 injured in fighting in Chechnya.
