Number of CPC Members Surpassing 64.5 Million: Official

By the end of last year, the number of Communist Party of China (CPC) members had surpassed 64.5 million, about 5.2 percent of the Chinese population, latest official statistics show.

Among them, 11.2 million were women and four million were ethnic minority members, accounting for 17.4 percent and 6.2 percent of the total CPC members respectively.

The latest statistics from the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee show that some 30 million CPC members, or 46 percent of the Party's total, were under the age of 45, which means approximately half of the Party population were born after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949.

Besides, 77,000 postgraduates and over 210,000 university and college students at school are CPC members.

And, one-third of the country's total college students had applied for Party membership, the statistics show.

Officials here believe that these figures disclose that Marxism- Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory have strong appeal to China's younger population.
