Guangdong, Taiwan Trade Fair Opens

Nearly 2,000 Taiwanese investors and businessmen gathered in Zhongshan city in Guangdong Province, south China, attending the 2001 Guangdong-Taiwan Economic and Technological and Trade Fair.

Over 200 projects were offered at the fair by 22 cities and prefectures in Guangdong inviting investment from Taiwan investors, including infrastructure, agriculture, machinery and electronics, food and beverage, construction material and real estate.

Guangdong ranks first among the Chinese mainland in absorbing investment from Taiwan.

By last year, the province had approved about 12,000 investment projects involving 9.6 billion U.S. dollars of Taiwan capital in real terms.

Lu Ruihua, governor of Guangdong, said at the opening ceremony that Taiwanese investment has been an important source of overseas capital for the province.

The province plans to open more sectors to Taiwanese investors, in particular the service sector, including finance, retail, trade, education, and medical service.
