Sri Lankan Govt Lifts Media Censorship

Sri Lankan government decided on Wednesday to lift with immediate effect the censorship imposed on military news items for both local and foreign media.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga issued the order which was imposed under tough emergency laws in May last year when separatist Tamil Tiger rebels intensified their attacks against government forces in northern Jaffna peninsula.

The decision was made at a closed-door meeting held in the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday, officials said.
