Top Palestinian Official Dies in Hotel Room: Kuwaiti Sources

Faisal al-Husseini, Palestinian Minister in charge of Jerusalem Affairs, died of a heart attack early Thursday in his room in Crown Plaza Hotel, Kuwaiti official sources said.

The official Kuwait News Agency quoted the sources as saying that the hotel called paramedics, who rushed to the hotel in Kuwait's central Farwaniya Governorate and found Husseini was already dead.

Forensic experts confirmed the death after conducting cross- checks, the sources said.

They said that the Kuwaiti authorities have prepared a plane to airlift the body of Husseini back to Amman, capital of Jordan.

The 60-year-old Husseini, also a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, arrived here Tuesday to attend a conference on anti-normalization of ties with Israel starting Thursday.

He is the first top Palestinian official to visit Kuwait since the 1990-1991 Gulf crisis triggered by Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait.

Kuwait cut its ties with the Palestinian authority as Palestinian leaders sided with Iraq during the crisis.

Restoration of the normal relations between the two sides has been under discussion over the past few years.
