Indonesian Parliament Calls for Session to Probe Wahid
Indonesian lawmakers voted by an overwhelming majority late Wednesday to call for a special session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), the country's highest constitutional body, to consider whether President Abdurrahman Wahid should be impeached.
The 500-member House of Representatives (DPR) adopted the call for a special session with 365 members voting for the move, four voting against and 39 members abstaining.
Wahid would be required to account for his performance as president before the 700-member assembly, which consists of the 500 House members and 200 other leaders from various fields.
If his accounting were rejected, the assembly would impeach him and appoint Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri as president.
