Seaside Resort Designing Winners Awarded

Three organizations were announced to be winners for designing a beach-based tourist and holiday zone in Beihai, a well-known seaside resort in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

According to local sources, the winners are China Research Institute of City Planning and Designing, Morris Architects (U.S.A.) and Moscow Research Design Institute for Culture, Leisure, Sports Public Health Construction. Each winner was given US$100, 000 as prize.

Last year, Beihai invited international bidding for Yintan (silvery beach) Tourist and Holiday Zone which extends 24 kilometers and has an area of 34 square kilometers, and 44 Chinese and overseas organizations answered the bids, six of which from the United States, Australia, China, Japan and Russia were invited to compete in designing the beach-based tourist and holiday zone.

Zhou Ganzhi, head of the nine-member committee for evaluation and appraisal and also an academician to both Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, said designs offered by the winners convey a world-level concept in planning and designing the beach-based zone, breathe unique views into the zone 's various aspects, including the development theme, target, use of resources, and ecological construction, and best demonstrate the features of Yintan in the future.

Beihai, situated on the northern side of Beibu Gulf, is one of China's most popular tourist cities. It hosts more than 3 million tourists annually.

Being one of the city's major scenic sites, Yintan (silvery beach) Tourist and Holiday Zone is best known for its vast beach featuring gentle waves, nice sand and no danger from sharks.
