Netherlands Okays US Use of Caribbean Air Base

The Dutch parliament has endorsed an accord to allow US aircraft to use Dutch bases in the Caribbean region as staging areas in fighting drug trafficking, the local press reported on Wednesday.

The legislators gave their go-ahead on Tuesday in spite of criticism that the deal could draw the Netherlands too close to American military operations.

Under the deal, US aircraft will be allowed to use facilities on Aruba and Curacao while making surveillance flights in Latin America.

The foreign affairs of the two islands, autonomous areas within the Dutch kingdom, are managed by The Hague.
