UN to Present 18 Awards on Environment Protection

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) said on Wednesday that 18 individuals and organizations have won this year's Global 500 Roll of Honor for their dedication to environmental protection.

Among the winners are the Dalian Municipal Government of China, the Environmental Investigation Agency of the United Kingdom, Dr. Frederick Gikandi of Kenya, Dr. Chan Eng Heng and Liew Hock Chark of Malaysia, Evergreen Club of Ghana.

The awards are presented every year by UNEP to individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment.

Since the inception of the award in 1987, 719 individuals and organizations, in both the adult and youth categories, have been honored with the Global 500 award.

"The winners of UNEP's Global 500 Roll of Honor are members of a broad and growing environmental movement that is flourishing around the world. They have taken the path that most of us hesitate to take for want of time or caring," said Klaus Topefer, executive director of UNEP.

The awards will be presented in Torino, Italy, at the World Environment Day 2001 ceremonies on June 5, according to UNEP.
