IATA to Hold 58th Assembly in Shanghai

The 57th Assembly of the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) closed Tuesday in Madrid and approved the celebration of the next assembly in the Chinese city of Shanghai in 2002.

The 57th assembly of the IATA, the global association of airlines, discussed airport capacity and air traffic increase, security, environment, infrastructure improvement, globalization, and other issues in the industry.

An IATA spokesman said representatives from 274 airlines discussed at Tuesday's closed-door meeting some internal issues, such as the future of the organization.

It was also decided that the 2003 assembly will be held in Washington to celebrate the centennial of the first flight of the Wright brothers in North Carolina, the United States in 1903.

The 58th IATA assembly in Shanghai will decide the president of the next assembly, to replace Xavier de Irala, president of the Spanish airline Iberia.
