More Deaths at Jalozai Refugee Camp in Northwestern PakistanAnother 33 deaths caused by high temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius and poor sanitation in May have been confirmed at Jalozai refugee camp near Peshawar, capital of the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan, said a report by the News Network International (NNI) on Tuesday.According to details, the victims include 21 children, who died of heatstroke and diarrhea, pushing the total numbers of deaths at Jalozai so far this year to 81 people. The U.N. agency in Pakistan last week made a breakthrough by announcing temporary emergency assistance to the refugees, including 650 metric ton of food aid, more water, latrines, dehydration facilities and an increase in doctors' working hours. An additional 60 community health workers were also brought in to educate the refugees on maintaining good health, while medical supplies were being distributed on a tent-to-tent basis. However, all these efforts would not suffice to halt the rising death toll with more refugees arriving every day. It is known that since last September, about 70,000 Afghans have fled fighting within their homeland and settled at Jalozai. |
