HK Welcomes US Decision to Extend China's NTR Status

Chau Tak Hay, secretary for commerce and industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Wednesday welcomed the announcement by the US President George W Bush that he will notify the US Congress on June 1 to extend normal trade relations (NTR) status for China for another year.

Chau said: "I am glad that President Bush has made this decision. The mainland and the United States are Hong Kong's two largest trading partners. Continuation of NTR status for China in the United States is therefore of great importance for Hong Kong's economy.

"As in the past, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government will continue to work together with the US business community to seek US Congressional support for President Bush's decision," Chau added.
