Reporters Start Environmental Tour Along Yangtze River
A detachment of reporters from 26 local news media organizations, including Xinhua News Agency, the People's Daily and China Central Television, kicked off Tuesday a three month-long journey along the Yangtze River to cover environmental issues.
A ceremony was held with Zou Jiahua, vice-chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, addressing the audience.
In his address, Zou pointed out that China is one of the worst victims of land erosion in the world, with one third of its territory suffering from the problem. Being the largest river in China, the Yangtze has also witnessed the worst soil erosion in China in terms of area and volume, he said.
The reporters' tour is a major part of the nationwide campaign to create greater publicity about the environment among the public, said Qu Geping, chairman of the NPC Environmental and Resources Protection Committee. The NPC committee is the organizer of the trip.
The journey is divided into three phases, with the first phase starting at the river mouth, in Shanghai, and ending at Wuhan, a central China metropolis; the second spanning from Wuhan to Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province; and the third between Kunming and the river source in Qinghai Province, in the northwest.
The journalists are expected to make their way through the Shanghai Municipality, Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province, Jiangxi Province, Hunan Province, Hubei Province, the Chongqing Municipality, Guizhou Province, Yunnan Province, Sichuan Province, Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, and Qinghai Province.
