Japanese PM to Meet US President on June 30Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will visit the United States next month for his first summit talks with US President George W. Bush on June 30 in Camp David, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said Tuesday.Koizumi is scheduled to leave Japan on June 29 and return to Tokyo on July 1 after visiting Washington D.C. and Camp David, the top Japanese government spokesman told a press conference. Koizumi's U.S. visit will be his first overseas trip since taking office in late April. During their talks, Koizumi and Bush are expected to have "a wide-ranging discussion on the future of Japan-U.S. relations and international situations," Fukuda said. Koizumi and Bush had agreed in a telephone conversation in April to meet at an early date. The Japanese prime minister had said he hoped to visit the U.S. prior to July's summit of the Group of Eight major nations in Genoa, Italy. The timing of the meeting will allow Koizumi to visit the U.S. after an election for the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly is held June 24 and the current Diet (parliament) session adjourns June 29. |
