Soldiers Deployed in Brazil to End Military Police Strike
Brazil's government Monday deployed more than 900 soldiers to the city of Palmas in central Tocantins state in an attempt to end a strike by 3,600 military police officers, army officials said.
The officers have been on strike for eight days, demanding higher salaries and better working conditions.
The soldier have been moved to Palmas from Brasilia, Goiania and Rio de Janeiro, military spokesman Belmiro Gregorio said.
A judge Friday declared the strike illegal. But the strikers, who have arms, have warned they will defend themselves if their barracks is stormed by the army.
At the same time, they have declared their readiness to negotiate.
