Large Coal Port to Operate By Year-end

The first-phase project of Huanghua Port, a large hub for the shipping of coal in north China, is expected to be put into operation by the end of this year, officials said Tuesday.

The first-phase project, which was launched in 1997, is composed of ground facilities like office buildings, gas stations and transformer substations, and port facilities including two berths and one dock which can accommodate all kinds of coal vessels.

The port, with an investment of over five billion yuan, is part of the giant Shenhua Project which is a combination of coal mines, power plants, ports and an 820-km special railway. The whole project costs almost 90 billion yuan.

For centuries, Huanghua has been a fishing port and one of the country's largest salt producers with a yearly output of 1.2 million tons.

Many investors from Japan, the United States, Germany, the Republic of Korea, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, have launched enterprises in the port area.
