Former Official Executed for Embezzling Huge Fund

Jin Jianpei, a former official and manager convicted of embezzling huge public funds, was executed in Wuhan Monday by a local court.

Jin, 56, former director of the Hubei Provincial government's office in Hong Kong and Macao, was convicted of embezzling 18.54 million Hong Kong dollars (19.28 million yuan) from two companies he was in charge of during late 1997 and 1998.

He gambled away all the money in Macao, according to a court ruling issued by the Wuhan Intermediate People's Court.

Jin was also convicted of embezzling more than 166 million Hong Kong dollars during 1996 to 1998 from three state-owned companies.

The execution, ordered by the Supreme People's Court, was carried out by the Hebei Provincial Higher People's Court.
