Indonesian President Cleared in Graft Scandals

Indonesian Attorney General's Office (AGO) has cleared President Abdurrahman Wahid of any wrongdoing over two graft scandals that drew parliamentary censures and triggered a push forwards impeachment.

The announcement was made by AGO spokesman Muljohardjo here on Monday night.

He said his office had also submitted to parliament result of the investigation into two graft scandals.

He said that investigators had received clarification from the Sultan of Brunei that he had donated 2 million U.S. dollars not as a grant to the state, but as a personal charitable donation from him to Wahid.

Wahid has also been accused of ordering the illegal reimbursement of 35 billion rupiah (about 3.5 million U.S. dollars) belonging to the State Logistics Agency (Bulog).

"In the Bulog scandal, it was only the former National Police chief Gen. Rusdihardjo, who said so (that the president was involved in the case) while the testimony of dozens of others do not show his involvement in the case," Muljohardjo was quoted by the Jakarta Post Tuesday as saying.

The president's masseur Alip Agung Suwondo is being tried for his part in the scandal while former Bulog deputy head Sapuan has already been sentenced to two years for graft.
