China Produces Most Mini-Vehicles in the World

China produced over 800,000 mini- sized motor vehicles last year, becoming the largest mini-vehicle producer in the world, according to latest statistics.

Mini-sized vehicles are those with an engine size of less than one liter air displacement, including mini-vans, mini sedans and mini trucks. Due to their small size, cheap prices and flexibility, mini-vehicles are becoming more popular among Chinese people.

In the past 20 years, the Chinese mini-vehicle industry developed rapidly, occupying one third of the total auto output. Five of the top ten automotive enterprises in China produce mini- vehicles.

The Chinese mini-vehicle production has maintained an annual growth of 25 percent over the past 20 years.

"With advanced technology introduced from abroad, China's mini- vehicles are up to international standards," said Du Fangci from the China Automotive Industry Association.

Domestic made mini-vehicles have been exported to Southeast Asia and South America. Some companies have even set up overseas workshops, such as the Chongqing Changan Company.

"Fierce competition in the domestic market will lead to mergers and regroupings, forming several leading companies in the end," according to an official with Changan.

Experts pointed out that the prices of domestic mini-vehicles are already below the international average, and they will continue to go down as production capability improves.

Meanwhile, more foreign companies, such as General Motors and Ford, are seeking cooperation in China's big potential market.
