Wahid Orders Security Minister to Re-Establish OrderIndonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has ordered his top security minister to take the necessary steps to re-establish order in the country, ABC(Australian Broadcasting Corporation) reports May 28.But the order appears to stop short of calling a state of emergency which Wahid has threatened to do if Parliament calls for a special session of the national assembly (MPR) to impeach him. "I am ordering the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Social and Security Affairs to take the necessary actions and special steps, coordinating with the security apparatus ... to overcome the crisis and restore order, security and law as soon as possible," said a presidential decree read out at the palace. The decree, read by presidential spokesman Yahya Staquf, said the step was taken "in relation to the emergency political situation that we are facing because of the controversy over the possibilities of a special session of the MPR and of a presidential decree." It did not provide further details. "There is no state of emergency, civil or military," Yudhoyono, a retired general, said, speaking after the announcement. Earlier today, the national police put its men on top alert across the country. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
