Macedonia to Cut Ties with Taiwan

Macedonia is to suspend "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan more than two years after switching recognition from Beijing to Taipei, the "foreign ministry" in Taipei announced Sunday.

Taiwan "ministry spokeswoman" Chang Siao-yueh confirmed Macedonian Foreign Minister Ilinka Mitreva told a press conference in the Macedonian capital Skopje two days ago that the policy of setting up "official links" with Taiwan itself was a mistake.

"The Macedonian government has recently been stepping up contacts with the Chinese communists to discuss restoration of diplomatic ties," Mitreva was quoted as saying.

Taiwan and Macedonia signed a joint communique for "diplomatic links" on January 27, 1999 without notifying then Macedonian president Kiro Gligorov.

Gligorov refused to accept the credentials of the "Taiwanese ambassador".

Twenty-nine countries recognise Taiwan.
