UNHCR Regional Meeting on Protection of Refugees Held in Macao

As part of the Global Consultations on International Protection of Refugees, a regional meeting in the Asia Pacific region launched by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) opened Monday morning in Macao.

The Macao Regional Meeting will focus on three important themes relating to contemporary developments in asylum and migration -- the identification of categories of persons in need of protection, the formulation of procedures to identify persons in need of protection, and the development of effective protection frameworks.

The two-day meeting involves representatives from 21 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including high-level government participants as well as refugee experts and non-governmental organizations from the region, and international organizations.

UNHCR expects that this regional meeting will produce concrete and practical recommendations for addressing some of the complex issues linked to ensuring asylum in the context of contemporary migration.

The Global Consultations on International Protection of Refugees mark the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and is designed to revitalize the international refugee protection regime. A ministerial meeting of States Parties will be co-hosted by the Swiss government and UNHCR in Geneva on December 12, 2001, to set the agenda for refugee protection in the 21st century.
