Ethiopia's Ruling Party Ends Discussion on Revitalization Drive

The Ruling Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) said on Sunday that it will conclude the on-going discussion on the revitalization drive within the party, after further deliberations by the public over the contents of the revitalization movement.

It is the firm belief of EPRDF that democracy can take root in Ethiopia only through the active and full participation of the people in the affairs of the country, the EPRDF said the party in a statement issued here marking the 10th anniversary of the victory over the military dictatorship.

It also noted that once the extensive discussion now underway over the elements contained in the revitalization movement is finalized, the EPRDF will turn its full force towards fighting corruption and the undemocratic practices in the country.

The statement further said that the party would also reinforce its capacity to fight undemocratic tendencies and elements that may surface in the process, adding that "the EPRDF will further consolidate the positive activities it has undertaken over the past ten years to solve the major problems of the country."

The threat against democracy and peace in the country can be defended in a sustainable manner when democratic culture takes root among the people and within the party itself, through the setting up of the institutions necessary for the promotion of democratic ideals and practices, according to the statement.

Also on Sunday, Ethiopian President Negaso Gidada said that the government would combine efforts to efficiently address the lofty tasks by adopting fundamental reforms of outlook, working techniques and organizations.

Such efforts would help achieve speedy and successful results that would relieve the nation from the grip of poverty, added the president.
