Senior Chinese Legislator on Local Family Planning WorkJiang Chunyun, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), as well as chairman of the Family Planning Association of China (FPAC), emphasized Sunday at a meeting that local family planning associations should step up efforts to perform competently in the new century. The meeting was held in the Chinese capital to mark the 21st anniversary of the founding of the FPAC. As the fundamental forces ensuring the implementation of China' s family planning policy, family planning associations at the grassroots level across China should be further built up, Jiang noted. The associations should take as their guideline the principles of the Chinese Communist Party and government, and develop more services for the benefit of local residents, Jiang said. Jiang said that the chairmen of local family planning associations play a significant role and should conduct more investigations so as to come up with more instructions and plans. In order to adapt to new situations, members of local family planning associations should improve their ideological and ethical standards through study, he noted. Zhang Weiqing, minister of the State Family Planing Commission, also attended the meeting.
